A breast implant is a prosthesis filled with silicone gel used to change the size, shape, and contour of the breasts. It is placed under the breast tissue or under the muscle through a surgical procedure. Breast implants are performed to enlarge, reduce, reconstruct lost breast tissue, and correct the shape of the breast. Implants come in different shapes, sizes, and filling materials, chosen according to the patient’s wishes and needs in consultation with a plastic surgeon.

Breast implants are permanent but do not last a lifetime. Over time, they can wear out or rupture, necessitating another surgery. The average lifespan of an implant is 10-15 years, but this varies depending on the patient's age, overall health, the implant itself, its placement, and the patient's lifestyle. Some implants may last five years, while others may last 20 years.

The sagging of breast implants depends on many factors. While implants are designed to resist gravity and loss of skin elasticity, the possibility of sagging cannot be completely eliminated. Large and heavy implants cause more sagging compared to smaller and lighter ones. Factors such as the elasticity of the skin and muscles, age, and weight changes can also contribute to sagging. Pregnancy and breastfeeding affect breast size and shape, leading to sagging. Additionally, smoking reduces skin elasticity and can cause implants to sag.

If there is swelling, redness, or pain in the breast, it may indicate that the implant is leaking. Changes in the shape and firmness of the implant, widening and visibility of surgical scars are signs that it is time to replace the implant.
