Dumping syndrome, which may occur after Gastric Bypass surgery, is caused by the rapid passage of food in the digestive system. In the gastric bypass procedure, due to the reduction of the stomach and its direct connection to the small intestine, the consumed food bypasses the normal digestion process and quickly reaches the small intestine and is absorbed quickly. This situation leads to dumping syndrome.
Dumping syndrome is divided into two in terms of the symptoms that manifest themselves after eating. Early dumping syndrome is when symptoms appear within 10-30 minutes after eating; Late dumping syndrome occurs when symptoms appear 1-3 hours after eating.
Symptoms of early dumping syndrome; nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and fatigue. Symptoms of late dumping syndrome are sweating, tremors, feeling of hunger, blurred vision and irritability.
To prevent dumping syndrome, it is necessary to eat slowly, chew thoroughly, and eat small meals frequently. Additionally, avoiding sugary and high-carbohydrate foods, not consuming liquids with meals, and staying away from alcohol and cigarettes also prevent dumping syndrome from occurring.
